This year has been a particularly challenging one as we moved to new facilities when we received notice that Martock would no longer be making snow on the back trails. That said, we started the season with a new name, Halifax Nordic, our new logo,  and were welcomed at the Brunello facility. We also added Smileys to our list of trails in 2018, bringing our groomed trails to five.

Nova Scotia had a winter with records set for lack of snow and it proved the need for snow making for our trails.  Looking at the downhill slopes,  both Martock and Wentworth still have plenty of snow despite all the rain we have received.  Halifax Nordic recognized that we needed snow making and launched our fundraiser to bring snow to Brunello in December 2017. Thanks to all who have contributed as we have raised over $12,000 this season for snow making.

Our pilot for snow making began in January and we had lots of learnings.  While the Brunello staff were able to get our snow guns working in the January cold spell, the long journey up from the pond and limited hoses proved a challenge in sub-zero weather as our hoses and equipment froze.  After several attempts at thawing and moving hoses, they were able to get the equipment working in February but the limited equipment, rocky trail and warmer weather meant that the conditions were still not skiable.

This brings us to current work and planning.  The Halifax Nordic Board will continue working this summer on grants, fundraising and with Brunello to get ready for next year.   We are working with Brunello for our 2018/19 season to overcome the challenges we faced this year.   We need to have better drainage so that the creek does not create a build up of ice at the top of the loop.   We will need to move soil, top dress and seed the ski area so that we can ski on limited snow like on the driving range.

We also are planning to change the system so that we don’t face frozen hoses and pumps.  We  hope to have  a water valve in the loop for 2019 as well as install underground piping so that our hoses won’t freeze. We would like to bring in a shed so that our equipment can be contained  to avoid freezing in cold weather.

We are also looking at more equipment. More hoses that can attach to the pipes as well as additional snow guns will allow us to move the guns around the loop with better snow coverage.   We will continue with fundraising  to increase the number of hoses and snow guns so that we can offer consistent skiing despite temperature fluctuations and winters like 2018.

If you are interested in joining the Halifax Nordic Board and  would like to help us as we grow the club and offer more consistent cross country skiing, please send us an email at info@halifaxnordic.ca or get in touch with any of our current board members. We welcome new members and new ideas to help the club grow!
